In Broby Grafiska in Sunne, Sweden, students on the education program Packaging design is trained in everything from idea to finished packaging. Now Billerud expands the cooperation with the school and offers the students to work with paper from Billerud.
Packaging design is, to a large extent, a practical education, with high demands on current materials and modern equipment. Broby Grafiska has an extensive collaboration with industry in graphic hardware and software, paint suppliers and not least, paper producers, to ensure that students are trained as close to reality as possible.
At the Design square students work with different projects and Billeruds material is available there.
On the school's so-called Design square there is a cutting table (as seen in Billerud Box Lab), advanced equipment and software and a photo studio. The school's premises also contain several computer rooms and a printing press.
One third of the education consists of internship. Teachers Mats Olsson says that there are many students who practice in organizations such as Ikea or Miller Graphics.
The fact that the education is conducted as close to reality as possible, makes the graduating students attractive to employers. Several companies are looking for employees among the students and about 80-90% of the packaging designers and graphic media producer has a job after graduation.
Cooperation for creative solutions
Jimmy Nyström, Business Development Director within Packaging Boards since March 2010, is engaged in the cooperation with Broby Grafiska. Jimmy's job is to actively participate in events, give lectures and make connections that take us further in various projects with brand owners and printers.
Cooperation with different partners to find new uses for our products & services, that allow that Billerud gets a stronger brand within the entire packaging chain, is an important part. Interaction with Broby Grafiska is an interesting part of this work.
The school is a focal point for the graphics industry where companies, brand owners and students meet. It is important for Billerud to participate actively in this work to support the school and its students so they can get the most out of their education, says Jimmy.
From Billerud we provide materials for teaching (paper and corrugated cardboard). In addition, we organize courses and seminars for students. We are also invited to lecture at the school and participate in their projects with converters and end users.
We offer expertise in our area and can assist in the development of packaging designs. In return our brand is visible in a positive environment for future designers and we can spread the right knowledge on paper in an early stage, before students begin their professional careers, Jimmy continues.
Customer event and design competition
In August, there will be a customer event at Broby Grafiska. In connection to this a specimen printout on Billerud paper will be made on the school's own printing press. The last customer event gathered 220 participants from all over Scandinavia.
