Again, it’s time for the prestigious design competition PIDA, Packaging Impact Design Award, for packaging design students from France, Germany and Sweden. This year’s challenge is to develop a packaging concept for food on the go – on your way to work, to the gym, a concert or a game. The winners of the Swedish leg of the competition will be declared at Fotografiska in Stockholm, on June 16. The competition is arranged and hosted by BillerudKorsnäs, with the purpose of driving development in packaging design while creating a common ground for the schools and the industry.
The PIDA theme this year is “Style and Smart On the Go”. The challenge for the designers-to-be is to create a concept for food we eat on the go – a concept that aligns well with new trends and lifestyles and a growing awareness of food. Nominees will present their design projects at Fotografiska on June 16, an event where the grand finale will be the award ceremony. Representatives of the press and other media are welcome to attend.
“The 2015 theme is a connection point for several clear current trends. The pace of our lives grows faster, which means that we need higher availability and an improved ability to make good use of time. Another trend is a higher demand for greener, more sophisticated and
health-conscious food. The days of take-away junk food are over. A meal on the go has to be tasty, appealing and highly functional. At PIDA this year, the design students are expected to create something that satisfies this entire span of demands,” says Agneta Rognli, Marketing Manager at BillerudKorsnäs.
The task at hand is to create a new, modern niche for food on the go – different from ordinary
take-aways and fast food – and create a concept that feels right for 2015. A few ground rules for the competition: the packaging must be made of premium cartonboard from BillerudKorsnäs. It has to
be innovative, functional and user-friendly. Environmental performance and production feasibility have to be considered.
“The interest in PIDA just keeps on growing. The events have become the highlight of the year for the schools and the industry alike, and an important meeting point. The professionals come here for inspiration and fresh ideas from a new generation of packaging designers. The students get the opportunity to show off their skills and get instant feedback on their projects from potential future employers. For us, the commitment to PIDA is a way to support the development of packaging design,” says Agneta Rognli.
BillerudKorsnäs is a leading supplier of material and packaging solutions and arranges PIDA annually in cooperation with universities and colleges in France, Germany and Sweden. The competition is a compulsory course in the educational programme, giving the students an opportunity to get acquainted with quality cartonboard while working with serious assignments with the same rules and conditions as authentic design projects.
The PIDA jury comprises prominent industry specialists – designers, converters, representatives of big consumer brands and the trade press. Prizes are awarded in four categories: “Best Level of Shelf Impact”, “Best Level of Innovation”, “Best Level of User Friendliness”, and “Winner All Categories”. The event also includes a seminar featuring keynote speakers who share their insights into current topics.
