Innovation is one of the cornerstones of our business, and we encourage innovation in the development of products and services in all areas of our organisation. Through innovation, we at BillerudKorsnäs want to challenge conventional packaging choices. Our ambition is to change the driving forces in the market by reinforcing the role of renewable packaging materials, and developing solutions that meet the sustainability challenges of the future. We create innovative products for a sustainable future.
In-depth knowledge of the entire refinement chain – from raw material to finished product – allows BillerudKorsnäs to offer more efficient business models, packaging with new properties, and give customers and consumers access to added value in the form of high-quality, eco-friendly options that are both profitable and user-friendly.
Through our Innovation Agenda, we collate and accelerate all BillerudKorsnäs’ ongoing initiatives and identify completely new ones so as to boost our innovation work on a daily basis. The Innovation Agenda focuses on three areas: Green material technologies, Service and logistics and Innovative business models.
New sustainable packaging solutions
One example of our sustainable innovations is the D-Sack™ cement sack, which dissolves when placed in a cement mixer. It does not even have to be opened – the paper material dissolves in contact with the water The self-dissolving sack, developed in partnership with LafargeHolcim, eliminates the time and cost associated with handling the used bags, and helps generate a cleaner, healthier and safer working environment. No dust, no mess, no waste – and better use of the time needed for handling and mixing. The sack was launched in spring 2015 and has already received several awards.
Innovation that helps reduce resource use
We generate innovations that improve our customers’ sustainability work. One example of this is BillerudKorsnäs’ New Billerud Flute®, which is used as the middle layer in corrugated board packaging designed to cope with demanding transport assignments and to combat climate issues. The strength of the material allows our customers to make equally strong boxes using less material. This, in turn, translates into lighter packaging and higher efficiency in every link of the logistics chain, providing both environmental and financial advantages. In short, it is a stronger fluting that enables customers to reduce packaging weight and material consumption.
BillerudKorsnäs is working hard to reinforce Sweden’s infrastructure in the field of research centred on new materials using natural resources from the forest. We are therefore involved in developing the Wallenberg Wood Science Center into a world-leading research centre. Through the process, we are also forging closer ties with some of Sweden’s elite educational institutions such as the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Chalmers University of Technology, and Lund University. Not only does this initiative generate significant research results, but it is also important for future recruitment and constitutes a step towards establishing international research partnerships. As such, we are working actively to reinforce Sweden’s infrastructure in the area of research centred on new materials using natural resources from the forest, supporting the development of young Swedish talents, and laying the foundations for more radical leaps in the area of product and process development, both at BillerudKorsnäs and in Sweden in general.
BillerudKorsnäs participates as a corporate partner in Sustainergies Cup – a competition in which students tackle real life assignments from companies looking to become even more sustainable through the application of good ideas – about how we will be packaging and buying food 50 years from now, for example.
